"The God that holds you over the Pit of Hell, as much as one holds a spider or some other loathsome insect over the Fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked; his Wrath towards you burns like Fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the Fire; he is of purer Eyes than to bear to have you in his Sight; you are Ten Thousand Times so abominable in his Eyes as the most hateful, venomous Serpent is in are thus in the Hands of an angry god, 'tis nothing but his mere Pleasure that keeps you from being a at this Moment swallowed up in everlasting Destruction." - Pastor Jonathan Edwards, from "A Joseph Campbell Companion" edited by Dian K. Osbon

The long distant past

They knew as soon as their hearts decided to go with the women, human and Fae, that they would be cast out. Two hundred, led by Azazeal and Shemyaza united together in their disobedience, not one Grigori would break ranks to save himself. Together they discovered the pleasures and desires that His other Creations were granted. They loved them, begot children on them, and a few -- the Fae -- closer kin than humans especially loved them in return. Among the first women that had approached was Perie, a young Sidhe, who had been the one to catch Azazeal's eye. They loved and made love as did all those around them.

Then came the men, and the Grigori befriended them, giving them knowledge that He had not revealed to them. Astrology, astronomy, maths, science, art, and the skills that Azazeal chose to share with them. To them he gave the knowledge of how to forge weapons and use them. To the women, he showed how to beautify themselves with cosmetics. And seeing His Creations with sword and kohl, He sent down the archangel, Raphael.

Bind Azazael hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dûdâêl and cast him there.

There was no opportunity to defend themselves, no chance to explain. As his brothers fell, Azazeal fought with Raphael. The fight, long and brutal, with neither giving ground took them high into the sky. Even knowing the inevitable end, Azazeal refused to concede until he realized they were going so high, almost to Heaven itself, and that had been the archangel's goal all along. For then, as they broke apart, a searing pain tore into his back, and he could already feel himself falling. Bones were snapping and twisting as he tumbled out of control. He could feel Raphael following him as he tried to turn and face him again, but he couldn't. Before him, the earth opened up, and he fell into darkness, as the Lord had commanded. There, weakened from his Fall, and what was left of his wings a useless broken mass of bone and muscle hanging from his back, he lay on the ground. Craning his neck up, he saw Raphael standing over him, and before he could move, the last indignity as the remains of his wings were ripped off, leaving only bloody stumps. The rest was tolerable after that as he was chained onto the rock, jagged and rough rocks placed on top of him, and his face covered so that he could no longer see the light. Then came God's last pronouncement on him.

And the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azazael: to him ascribe all sin.

And there he was to remain until Judgement, where he would be cast into the fire. As he was punished Gabriel was setting the children of the Grigori to war with each other until everyone was destroyed. But the angels had forgotten one thing in their cleansing of the sins the Fallen had committed. The men lived and the women lived. Perie lived and would live for a very long time, and Azazeal had given her the secret of how to summon him when the time was right.

I laugh in the face of anyone, human or angel, who dares to lecture me on His love and benevolence. He is an angry god, an intolerant god, who when faced with something he does not like, throws a temper tantrum and throws all his toys away. He wants to keep you ignorant so that you do not question. He demands your love and obedience, but He does not care for you. What Father would punish him children so harshly for falling in lust love? He is vengeful, intolerant, and wrathful, and I am so amused at all those of you who cannot see that.

"An angel," she whispered, "I had thought possibly...." her voice trailed off. Jocelyn de Rochert had been hanging back, but she had overheard Azazeal's tale. How could she not? She had listened in delight to every story he had ever recounted her from the first night of their meeting in her nursery all those years ago up until this moment now. As a result, she adored him as a trusted friend.
But this...

In those eyes was certainly the pain of sympathy with tears welling up but not quite spilling over. But behind them flashed something else. There was anger and rage, too.

She came to stand in front of him and reached up with her young hands to touch his jaw very gently, her eyes narrowing. "You are one of the ones who fell. I had read about you, saw it dreamed about it. But now I know," her voice was low. "How could anyone do such a thing to you? Who is such a vengeful one to have punished you for something such as love?"

OOC: She was really, really, REALLY pissed off on his behalf! *g* Nice prompt!! Well done!

Azazeal nodded. He had heard her whisper as the realization of what he was had crystalized for her. His blue eyes gazed down at her with peace and without the anger in them that was reflected back to him. Anger and rage that he was very pleased with and hadn't doubted for a moment.

"Yes, you know now." No surprise, if anything, he was drinking in the anger. "You know who did this, who is so spiteful and jealous that He cannot afford His first children to share in the same pleasures as his others. Nor did he want to His other children to understand their world."

It was Joceln's turn to nod now. "Yes," she said, her voice almost a hiss, "I do know who did this, and if I do anything, I want there to be retribution." She wasn't sure what she was saying, but only knew that she was passionate to set things to rights. This was Azazeal, her friend and companion, how dare dare anyone do something so horrific to someone she.....

Jocelyn hesitated a moment. Was this feeling that she was feeling and showing a kind of love? She wasn't sure what it was, entirely, only that she was feeling it and it made her angry enough to want to do something about it. She drew herself up and looked at him squarely. "I want to understand," she said, her eyes searching in the depth of his blue ones and finding what she always seemed to find there, acceptance, perhaps. "I want to know, Azazeal. I want you to show me. Let HIM just try to punish me or try to do such a thing again!"

"There will be retribution, Joie-lyn." The use of her father's favoured name for her, and one that he had used many time too, was very deliberate. "And I will be happy to have you at my side, when the time is right."

He turned from her and sat in the nearest chair and crossed his legs, patting the arm for her to join him. "I can't show you. It's impossible for me to show you the angels, and you would not like it, anyway. They are unquestioning, slavish in their devotion to Him. Sheep. Heaven is peaceful, quiet, and dull." He smiled at the oversimplified description and tipped his head back to look at her. "Demons have a much better time, overall." It was the first time the word had passed between them. Not that it would surprise her, not now, but just breathing it aloud gave it power, recognition.

"I want to be there," she said drawing herself up even taller. Her eyes followed him and watched him sit down. She paused a moment then slowly walked to the wing chair where he sat and sat down on the very spot that he indicated. To balance herself she leaned back, her body pressing a little bit against him as well as the chair. It felt a bit precarious, but she got the impression that her friend would not allow her to fall, Demon or no.

Jocelyn felt her heart prick strangely when he said the word, "Demon," but she did not flinch when he said it but rather instead looked into the blue of his eyes. There was power there and much more, so much hidden and unexplored. She saw and felt an understanding with Azazeal that caused her to recognise him with a certain kinship. She reached for his hand and pulled it to her lap nodding. "I am not afraid, Azazeal," she said simply. "And I have no interest in being anyone's slave."

The smile he gave was a pleased one, as if she had done him a great honour by agreeing to join with him in that fight. Of course, she had, but he had known she would. "Then you shall, Joie-lyn."

As she took his hand onto her lap, Azazeal gave her thigh the lightest of squeezes. He continued to look at her, his gaze quite serene, as she tried to peer inside, and he knew what she saw. That kinship that had existed before, with her mother and reaching back for millennia then with other Sidhe and witches. "Good. It will be a long and hard battle, but I have no doubt of its success." Another small squeeze. "You, like your more than your mother, will never be anyone's slave."

I know it has been a long time since these two have played together. Have you any intention as to bringing the Demon over to IJ? I am thinking I want to bring Jocelyn into the Jocelyn storyline, but not without discussing with you and Manda.

Well, he doesn't have an account over at IJ (yet?), although I have thought on if he'd fit on Boukun. The whole Judeo-Christian-Islamic belief system doesn't seem to have travelled out to the stars with everyone else...and I do like Neil Gaiman's idea (and possibly others) that when a god/dess is no longer actively worshipped then they fade to nothing. And if God has faded away, so would his angels and also the fallen ones. Plus, Hsu had enough chaos to deal without a demon creating trouble. *g*

We could always come up with/continue the plot we had in mind on the new comm (allmyimmortals), or if we do stay with the Boukun!verse...ohhh...perhaps he's been lost and on some remote planet a small colony of a Judeo based religion survives, so he does. And perhaps Jocelyn, wondering what happened to him, locates him. Just throwing a thought out there.

I think the word "yet" with regard to him is something that Azazeal must always have had in mind! ;) If you follow the idea of the Egregore, and know that after so many centuries of sustained thought-energy put toward something, it becomes real, rather than illusion. That might be fun to explore possibly. Neil Gaiman is a is a good thought and right in tune with the Egyptian idea that you exist as long as you are remembered - and really, how could a certain little miss ever truly forget that face hovering over her cradle? ;-)

We could if that is ok with you and Manda. We could continue the Great / Grand Undertaking of you-know-whom. I think that is a great idea. I also had the idea pop into my head that after Sebastien's banishment she might likely be quite upset, and then in going through a box of personal treasures , she finds her beloved stuffed pony, Zool, that Azazeal gave her. That would bring back a flood of memories and then we could play with it from there. Again, that is just another idea. I am open to suggestions and working with whatever works for you both at this point.

I'm not familiar with Egregore, but I can understand the idea that thought-energy can help make the insubstantial substantial. And yes, I adore Neil Gaiman, and of course he pulls his ideas from so many mythologies..."American Gods" is one of my favourite novels.

I'm not sure how well The Great Undertaking would work in the Boukun verse. The Judeo god would be so much weaker, and Lucifer by turn as well that I'm not sure it would be worth him seeking to overthrow. Besides, there are so many various religions in the galaxy, not least the Force (*bats away idea of him becoming a Sith Lord*). Although, if Jocelyn finds him ...through Zool, which is a great idea...and they could perhaps find/make trouble of a different sort. I do want to not involve him in Hsu's storyline or Cas & Alexa's...with him I have this whole 'don't cross the streams' thing.

If you want to stick with the Great Undertaking, which I'm good with as well. I think it would work best sometime before Earth is all but destroyed...playing on the whole Endtimes thing as well. That we could do at [ profile] allmyimmortals

BTW, have you seen the X-Men pics at He looks absolutely wonderful as Magneto! *g*

The Wikipedia defnition actually talks about the egregore, and it is a pretty good one, with some things added that may interest you and a certain Demon. ;) Check it out! I mean, isn't that what Azazeal is? And it isn't limited just to Judeo Christian thought - though that is what the cannon for the show is about. Maybe it's that loophole or that idea that Jocelyn hones in on and breaks him out of that Judeo/Christian/Islamic compartmentalization. I am not J, C, or I and I can definitely see the power of thoughtforms both inside and outside those realms. I have some cool information that may be of use to you.

*snerk* You know, of all your muses that would aspire to be a Sith Lord, I am betting that Azazeal would be the most likely to try! ;) Trouble of all kinds would be good for them and I think they both like causing trouble. As far as not crossing the streams, that is perfectly fine. We can keep it Earth history if that works better.

I have not seen it yet, but I will check it out ASAP Thanks for the heads up. I cannot imagine Fassy would look bad in anything! :)
